Research News: More evidence needed to inform policy around sending kids back to class

Are kids in schools driving community transmission of COVID-19, or is it the other way around? These questions are difficult to answer and researchers at Western University say this uncertainty could be clarified by conducting cluster randomized trials when students return to class, according to a new publication from an international team of experts co-led by Dr. Charles Weijer.

A new survey led by researchers at Western University is exploring the experiences of trans and non-binary Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic – statistics that until now were largely invisible in the Canadian data. The first reports shown that during the pandemic, more than 30 per cent of trans and non-binary Canadians had interruptions to health care and one in ten avoided COVID-19 testing/care.

Researchers at Western University have developed a way to pull HIV out of the latent reservoir making the virus visible to the immune system and providing the potential to be killed by treatment. Part of what has made HIV infection so difficult to cure, is that once the virus enters the body, some of it hides dormant inside of the cells, making it essentially invisible to both the immune system and antiretroviral drugs. This hiding virus is known as the ‘latent reservoir.'

In a case study published today, researchers used a specialized MRI technique in a set of twins with asthma. While the twins are non-identical, the researchers found that they actually had identical ventilation defects in the same upper left lung segment, which stayed the same over the duration of the seven year study.

Research: Using artificial intelligence and brain stimulation to improve treatment for psychosis

A new grant from CIHR in collaboration with the EU consortium has provided a total of $2.1 million to establish a network of research centres focused on personalized medicine for mental disorders. Media Release: Researchers uncover gene that regulates fat accumulation and obesity

A new study from Western University showed that regardless of diet, a protein called Pannexin 1 (Panx1) significantly regulates the accumulation of fat in mice. The study, published in Scientific Reports, suggests that a deletion of the Panx1 gene in the early stages of development of mouse fat cells increases the amount of fat accumulated, leading to a higher risk for obesity later in life.

Common prostate drug could increase risk of depression, self-harm

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry professor Blayne Welk (Division of Urology) said the use of medications finasteride and dutasteride – for the treatment of an enlarged prostate – doesn’t increase the risk of suicide, but has shown a slight increase in the risk of depression and self-harm in some individuals. His research was published in JAMA Internal Medicine this past month.

Jeff Carson saw a picture-perfect opportunity to spin his lab work into a new company. The Medical Biophysics professor, whose research focuses on biomedical imaging applications, including photoacoustic tomography to detect breast cancer, recently applied his skills in multispectral imaging and launched Spectral Devices Inc. Located in Western’s Research Park, the company is developing a vast array of filtered lenses to be used in everything from agriculture and aerospace, to industrial automation and satellites.

Western postdoctoral fellow Molly Henry, part of Jessica Grahn’s Music and Neuroscience Lab at the Brain and Mind Institute, was recognized with the Association for Psychological Science Rising Star Award, which identifies outstanding psychological scientists in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD.
