Announcement: Dr. Alishya Burrell Appointed as Assistant Dean, Learner Experience (UME) (Acting)
Dr. Alishya Burrell
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alishya Burrell as Assistant Dean, Learner Experience (UME) (Acting), Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University, effective March 1, 2025 to August 31, 2025.
Dr. Burrell is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. She received her MD from Western University as a graduate of the Windsor Campus in 2014 and completed her Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine Residencies at Western. In 2022, she completed a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Maastricht University.
Dr. Burrell’s primary area of expertise is curriculum development and innovation in Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). Within Schulich, Dr. Burrell is a member of the Academy of Educators and, as a leader in Geriatric Medicine for UME, has integrated geriatric competencies across the UME curriculum. This work was recognized nationally by the Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS) Peter McCracken Physician Innovator in Education Award in 2024. She is a Course Chair for the Foundations of Medicine course. She has also spearheaded the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) learning objectives into the UME curriculum, updated the UME Plagiarism Policy, and developed generative AI Principles of Use for UME.
On a national level, Dr. Burrell is the vice-chair of the CGS Education Committee and was a working group member in the development of the CGS Aging Care 5M Competencies for Graduating Medical Students, which were disseminated to schools of medicine and used by the Medical Council of Canada to update the Examination Objectives.
Dr. Burrell has always been passionate about mentoring trainees and early-career clinicians interested in Geriatric Medicine. She has been a coach with the Academic Coaching Program since its inception. She is also the physician advisor for multiple trainee interest groups at Western, including the Medical Student and Resident Geriatric Interest Groups and the Student AI Interest Group. Dr. Burrell looks forward to being a part of the Learner Experience Office (LEO) team and continuing to support student success at Schulich.
