Bogumil Karas, PhD, is using synthetic biology techniques – the design and construction of new biological entities – in order to develop a method to efficiently capture DNA from pollen grains. Because different plant species are endemic, scientists use pollen to identify their place of origin. In this way, pollen can be used as a forensic tool to link suspects to crime scenes, or to determine the movement of narcotics, for example.

A new study from Western University showed that regardless of diet, a protein called Pannexin 1 (Panx1) significantly regulates the accumulation of fat in mice. The study, published in Scientific Reports, suggests that a deletion of the Panx1 gene in the early stages of development of mouse fat cells increases the amount of fat accumulated, leading to a higher risk for obesity later in life.

In a new study from Lawson Health Research Institute and Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, researchers have found that mutation of a gene called ATRX may lead to increased risk of developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer in females. Researcher led by Dr. Julio Martinez-Trujillo has shown that our brains are pre-wired to perceive wrinkles around the eyes as conveying more intense and more sincere emotions. This eye-wrinkle feature, called the Duchenne marker, occurs across multiple facial expressions, including smiles, expressions associated with pain, and—as found by these researchers—expressions of sadness.

Dr. James McAuley, a professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and researcher at Western’s Bone & Joint Institute, died Dec. 28 following a battle against a brain tumour. The university’s flag will be lowered today at 11 a.m. in his memory.

He was the co-founder and former medical director of the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic at Western and has served as Chief Medical Officer to Canadian National teams at Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
