Dr. Eldon Loh
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Eldon Loh has been appointed as the Earl Russell Chair in Pain Management at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2029.
In 2001, Dr. Loh graduated with an Honour’s Bachelor of Science in Philosophy (SMC) and Human Biology from the University of Toronto. In 2005, he received his MD from Western University. Dr. Loh completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Alberta and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2010. Dr. Loh then completed a clinical fellowship in interventional pain management at Healthpointe Medical Centres in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2011, Dr. Loh joined the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
Dr. Loh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and an Associate Scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute. He is the Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Regional Rehabilitation Program, as well as the Medical Director of the PMR Clinical Research Unit (PRCRU). Dr. Loh is chair of the international committee responsible for developing pain guidelines for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and chair of the CanPainSCI CPG, the first Canadian guidelines on the management of neuropathic pain after SCI. He has also served as the Chair of the Research Committee for the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Loh and his team have received numerous recognitions for their work in interventional pain medicine, including a high-impact paper award at the 2022 International Spine and Pain Intervention Society annual meeting. Dr. Loh's work has received significant recognition, with two of his recent publications being featured as cover articles and editor's choice in Pain Medicine: one in May 2023 and the other in January 2024. Dr. Loh and his team have also received the Best of Pain Medicine 2023 Editor’s Choice recognition for their work on lumbar radiofrequency ablation.
Dr. Loh’s research interests encompass enhancing the management of chronic neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury, as well as advancing the development of innovative and enhanced techniques for interventional pain management. His focus on interventional pain research centers on translating laboratory discoveries into clinical practice by integrating anatomical insights. This approach has revolutionized traditional views on the anatomical foundations of interventional pain procedures, challenging long-held assumptions. He has also explored the utilization of various interventional procedures, such as radiofrequency ablation and paravertebral nerve blocks, within Ontario's health-care system.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Eldon Loh on his appointment as the Earl Russell Chair in Pain Management.
