2025-2026 R. G. E. Murray Lectureship

On May 28th, 2026, the Department of Microbiology & Immunology welcomes Dr. Johan Sandberg, from the Karolinska Institutet as our 2025-2026 R.G.E. Murray Annual Lecturer.

Dr. Johan Sandberg, PhD

Dr. Robinson's headshotJohan Sandberg is a Professor of Viral Immunology at Karolinska Institutet, where he has been based since returning in 2003 and was appointed professor in 2013. He leads a research group at the Center for Infectious Medicine and serves in leadership and editorial roles within the scientific community. Sandberg trained in molecular biology at Uppsala University and earned his PhD in immunology at Karolinska Institutet, followed by international research experience at institutions including Harvard Medical School, Rockefeller University, and the University of California.

His research focuses on understanding how the human immune system responds to viral and bacterial infections, with a particular emphasis on T cell–mediated immunity. His group investigates both conventional adaptive T cells and unconventional innate-like T cell subsets—such as MAIT and iNKT cells—and their roles in host defense, immunopathogenesis, and vaccine responses. By integrating fundamental immunology with patient-based and translational research, Sandberg’s work aims to advance new strategies for treating infectious diseases and improving immune-based therapies.
