Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EDID) Statement
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment where all members of our community can thrive through the promotion of education, dialogue, and reflection on equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
We support this work by sharing relevant resources, creating opportunities for learning, and encouraging conversations that build awareness. Our efforts are informed by ongoing engagement with university-wide initiatives and evolving best practices, and aim to support a culture of curiosity, openness, and continual growth.
EDID Committee
Core Values

- Curiosity and Learning – We foster a culture of continuous learning and reflection around equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
- Respectful Dialogue – We support open, respectful conversations that help build understanding across differences and foster a more inclusive environment.
- Responsiveness – We adapt our work based on community input, evolving knowledge, and the specific needs of our department.
- Collaboration – We align our efforts with broader Western University initiatives and work in partnership with other departments within the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry to support shared goals.
Future Goals
- Prepare a bulletin board in the Microbiology & Immunology with EDID resources
- Host an EDID focused seminar in our Departmental Seminar Series.
Progress
May 2025 – The Microbiology & Immunology EDID committee met to establish our future goals
June 2025 – The Microbiology & Immunology EDID committee developed a Mission Statement and Core Values
June 2025 – Relabeled single-occupancy washrooms in SDRI as gender-neutral to support inclusivity and accessibility
Fall 2025 – The EDID webpage for Microbiology & Immunology website was created, a first in the history of the Department.
June 2025 – The Microbiology & Immunology EDID committee developed a Mission Statement and Core Values
