Data Sources

  1. Look through below resources to get ideas for topics.
  2. Many of these resources have data available to the public, to Western users (sometimes for a fee) to use if you would like to do a secondary analysis.
  3. If you want to use one of the survey guides and administer yourself, make sure you get approval from the original authors.
  4. Use data in your writeup and reference the source
  • Map and Data Centre - "Services available at the Map and Data Centre include access to data and map collections and reference assistance related to locating and using statistics, microdata, cartographic materials and geospatial files." Suggest start by using the Equinox or <odesi> as search engine to see what data relates to your topic of interest.
  • Research Data Centre - "Research Data Centres (RDC) provide researchers with access, in a secure university setting, to microdata from population and household surveys.... Access to data is allowed after approval of an application that has been peer reviewed through a process managed jointly by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and Statistics Canada."  The RDS also offers: "Workshops, conferences and training about statistical techniques and the use of data are periodically conducted for researchers.  Projects undertaken at the RDC have generated products including master’s thesis, doctoral dissertations, and publications in books and journals."
  • Statistics Canada - If require raw data, access the Map and Data Centre to check whether Western has access to datasets.
