The Guthrie & Guariglia Labs

Weekly Lab Meeting | EDID Segment

During our joint lab meetings we incorporate a short Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) segment into weekly meetings. The presenting trainee prepares one slide highlighting an EDI-related topic relevant to science, research, or academia. These brief segments are intended to promote awareness and encourage discussion in a low-barrier, routine setting.

What's Involved?

Each week, the scheduled presenter includes a one-slide EDI Spotlight as part of their lab meeting presentation. Topics are self-selected and have included highlighting scientists from underrepresented groups, sharing organizations such as the Canadian Black Scientists Network, and facilitating short discussions or exercises. Some sessions have focused on broader issues, such as how the naming of diseases or outbreaks can contribute to stigma or bias. The format is intentionally flexible to allow for both informational and interactive approaches.

Impact

This approach has created a consistent and approachable space for EDI-related learning and discussion within the lab. It has encouraged participation from all trainees and exposed the group to a range of perspectives and topics that may not arise in routine scientific discussions.
