Infectious Diseases Institute

Founded in 2001 and wholly owned by Makerere University, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) emerged during Uganda’s HIV/AIDS crisis to expand access to care, research, and public health training. Initially supported by the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention and Pfizer, IDI has grown into a leading national organization known for its evidence-based, community-driven interventions. With operations in 92% of Uganda’s districts and collaborations across 23 African countries, IDI addresses a wide range of infectious diseases, from HIV and TB to emerging global health threats.
IDI works closely with Uganda’s Ministry of Health to deliver clinical services, manage research studies, and strengthen health systems through capacity development. Their six core programs focus on prevention and treatment, laboratory innovation, health security, and professional training. With a reputation for excellence, accountability, and innovation, IDI serves as a vital training ground for students eager to contribute to high-impact, multidisciplinary global health work.
