Integrated Learning Experience

A key feature of the Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) in Global Health Systems is the 300-hour summer practicum placement with a partnering organization on the African Continent. In fulfillment of the requirements of the MHSc to provide students with professional experiences within the field of Global Health, students in the GHS program will partake in a 300 hour (unpaid) internship experience with a partnering organization and/or institution abroad, immediately after the conclusion of the Field Course (at the end of May). Placements are based on the individual students’ interest, and the student experiences gained over the course of the summer months enrich the preparation of our graduates and students for project management employment opportunities in health care, both in Canada and abroad.

Placement Identification Process

Practicum projects are tailored to suit students in each cohort. At the beginning of each academic year, students are asked to write a brief bio outlining their interests and future career objectives. The Global Health Systems Program Committee reviews these written submissions to identify suitable practicum placements with our partnering organizations and institutions in East Africa (Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda).
