Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC)

Founded in 1991 amid Uganda’s severe HIV/AIDS crisis, JCRC emerged as a government-backed but independently governed research and treatment institution. With its headquarters in Kampala and six Regional Centers of Excellence—in Mbarara, Mbale, Kakira, Gulu, Fort Portal, and Lubowa—JCRC combines cutting-edge laboratory services, clinical care, and capacity building. As the world’s first recipient of PEPFAR funding, it pioneered antiretroviral treatment (ART) and HIV vaccine trials, and now maintains accredited labs in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, mycobacteriology, and virology. Its expansive network supports both research and patient care across Uganda, from urban referral hospitals to rural outreach clinics.
Today, JCRC conducts over 26 active studies (40% focused on HIV) out of more than 100 completed projects, spanning vaccine research, TB co-infection, non-communicable diseases, and cell & gene therapy. The organization also delivers comprehensive clinical services—outpatient care, pharmacy, imaging, sickle-cell support, and more—with HIV prevalence management achieving a 60% decline in incidence since its founding. Strong operational and financial systems underpin these efforts, managed by a team of 1,500 staff and overseen by strategic partners including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defense, and Makerere University.
