Listowel Program Curriculum

Please review the PGY1 and PGY2 curricula below. Note that all rotations are subject to availability and other arrangements may be necessary if a rotation is not available. If you prefer another location other than what is listed below, please indicate it on your preferences survey; however, we cannot guarantee that a resident’s preference can be accommodated.

Features of our Rural – Listowel Program

The Listowel curriculum combines a rotation-based schedule in the first year, with an integrated longitudinal schedule in the second year.  It is our intention to provide residents a breadth of learning experiences in a rural setting that will prepare them for work anywhere in Canada.

The first year curriculum includes a 20 week block of family medicine complimented with off service rotations in areas that will provide extra skills for a rural practice.  Off service rotations are supported by nearby teaching sites including Stratford and Wingham so as to minimize travel time.

The second year is a longitudinal year spent mostly in Listowel.

There is an opportunity for up to 16 weeks of elective time (8 weeks in PGY1 and 8 weeks in PGY2), which can be tailored to the needs and goals of the resident.

Residents are required to live in Listowel in their PGY2 year, and encouraged to do so in their PGY1, with the support of the site to guarantee suitable housing.  Living in the community, the resident can expect a wide range of experience including family medicine clinic, emergency department, obstetrics, acute and chronic inpatient medicine, anaesthesia, surgical assist, long term care, palliative care, and house calls with their family medicine preceptor.
