Biography

Dr. Abbas Jessani is a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the Coordinator for Community Dental Outreach at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University. Dr. Jessani completed his graduate training in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia, with a focus on public health dentistry. Dr. Jessani earned his MSc and PhD through exploring the unmet oral health needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations in British Columbia, such as people living with HIV, refugees, and pregnant women. He also looked into the experiences of stigma and discrimination faced by HIV-positive community members while accessing healthcare services in British Columbia. While finishing his PhD, Dr. Jessani led the department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan where his teaching philosophy focused on risk based patient management and minimally invasive dentistry.

Dr. Jessani has directed several dental outreach programs at University of British Columbia and the University of Saskatchewan since 2011 and has won several awards for his excellence in teaching and research. Presently, he is the course director for preclinical operative dentistry and is also leading the local and global community oral health outreach at Schulich Dentistry. Currently, his research lab is looking into the barriers of accessing healthcare and oral care services in marginalized communities, particularly from lower SES, HIV/HCV-positive, 2SLGBTQ and Indigenous community members in Saskatchewan and Ontario. In the area of global health, he is very keen in looking into access to oral care disparities in low-income African countries such as Uganda and South Africa.
