About the program


Our highly competitive program offers the academic foundation and clinical training essential for specialization in orthodontics. Across 36 continuous months, you'll receive advanced education in the science and art of orthodontics, learn the essential techniques of the speciality, undertake supervised diagnosis and treatment of complex cases, and prepare a publishable thesis.

The program is fully accredited by the Council on Education of the Canadian Dental Association, and meets the specialty certification requirement of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and the eligibility requirement of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

In 2020 the Antonios Mamandras Chair in Graduate Orthodontics was established, funded by an ambitious alumni campaign. Dr. Mamandras was the program’s esteemed director from 1994 to 2019. This prestigious Chair, the first endowed chair of a graduate orthodontic program in Canada, ensures program excellence by supporting faculty recruitment and advancing orthodontic research and education. Requirements

Educational background

  • DDS or DMD (or equivalent) required
  • ADAT scores (valid 3 years) must be sent directly to Western if your dental school is non-accredited
  • ADAT is waived when you also hold an accredited MSc/PhD in a dental field

Academic performance

  • Minimum B (75 %) average in dental school
  • Relevant research or professional experience may offset a lower GPA on a case-by-case basis

Clinical experience

  • At least one year in general or specialty practice or a residency (GPR, AEGD, specialty program)

English-language proficiency

Required only if your dental degree was taught in a non-English setting. Submit one of:

  • TOEFL iBT minimum acceptable score is 4.5, with no individual score below 4 (Schulich ID 8956)
  • IELTS Academic 7.5 overall, no band below 6
  • Duolingo 135
    Waived if you later earned an MSc/PhD at an English-language institution. Alternative proof may be considered—contact us for details.
