On October 10, 2023, Schulich Dentistry’s Research Department hosted its 18th Annual John T. Hamilton Distinguished Lecture and 2023 Research Day event. The in-person event brought together over 350 students, faculty, and staff members.

The event commenced with 21 undergraduate and graduate student poster presentations. Poster topics ranged from dental technologies to dental aging studies, all the way to broad questions concerning global oral health. Students were then judged by Schulich faculty and alumni to compete for cash and travel awards.

Following the presentations, the John T. Hamilton Distinguished Lecture was presented by acclaimed expert Dr. Habib Benzian. Dr. Benzian is a Professor of Epidemiology & Health Promotion at NYU Dental College. He is also the Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Quality Improvement and Evidence-based Dentistry at NYU Dentistry. His lecture titled Globally Competent and Locally Relevant – Why Global Oral Health Matters focused on providing a glimpse into the status of oral health globally and outline some of the key challenges that people, health planners and decision makers are facing today. By further exploring the new global policy guidance from the WHO, he emphasized the importance of advocacy and for future oral health professionals to not be content with the current status of global oral health. The lecture concluded with an insightful question and answer discussion.

After the lecture, the event hosted a sign-up Lunch and Learn mentorship event which hosted 6 mentors, and over 60 students. The event allowed students to sign-up to their preferred session, and chat with esteemed leaders in their profession over lunch. Mentors shared their experiences, insights and advice, and included Drs. Habib Benzian, Carlos Quiñonez, Karin Van Ryswyk, Harinder Sandhu, Brock Nicolucci and Keven Hockley.

To conclude the event, awards were handed out to the top three poster presentations in both the undergraduate and graduate category. Please see full list of awards and award winners here.

Special thanks to Dr. Noha Gomaa and Ms. Karina Koren for organizing this event and to Schulich Dentistry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Ontario Dental Association for supporting this event.
