Convocation 2022

Schulich Dentistry’s Class of 2022 enjoyed a beautiful sunny backdrop for their special day on June 23, 2022. Before our graduates crossed the stage at the morning’s Convocation ceremony, they heard a powerful speech from honorary Doctorate of Science (D.Sc) degree recipient Dr. Danielle Martin. Dr. Martin reflected on issues of equity that were highlighted during the pandemic and reminded health care professionals to advocate for equitable access to care for all populations.

After the ceremony, the new Doctors of Dental Surgery were able to take advantage of the sunshine for lots of impromptu photoshoots, then they headed over the Great Hall along with their invited guests, faculty, and staff for a luncheon and award ceremony led by Master of Ceremonies Dr. Fernando Inocencio.

Awards of Distinction were presented by leaders from Schulich Dentistry, the LDDS, and the ODA, as well as former Acting Vice Dean and Director Dr. Bertha Garcia. Dr. Garcia expressed how proud she was of the entire class for overcoming many challenges, particularly in their clinical years, as she presented Dr. Kaylie Magidson with the UWO Gold Medal.

Dr. Sandy Venditti, President of the RCDSO led the students in reciting the RCDSO Oath of Commitment, and then Honorary Class President Dr. Keven Hockley announced each student’s name to enthusiastic applause as they crossed the stage again to receive their RCDSO license and additional awards.

Dentistry’s new Vice Dean and Director Dr. Carlos Quiñonez delivered the Farewell Address to the class. “No matter where you practice, I would ask you to become involved in your community,” he advised. “Get to know your neighbours; make yourself available as a coach, advocate, or mentor. Be of service.” He also encouraged them to consider returning to the school in the future to teach, reminding them that many of the faculty they met over the past four years were also graduates of Western University who returned to share their expertise with future generations.

Dr. Greg Sigel, President of Dental Student Council (UWODSS) wrapped up the event with a stirring valedictory address. He encouraged his classmates to reflect on the “true transformation of self” they experienced during their time at Schulich, and remarked “Whether we’re moving back to our hometown, or to another province, or to another country, we bring these skills, all these lessons and experiences, with us. How incredible.”
