Announcement: Welcome to Dentistry's newest faculty members

Five new faculty members have recently joined Schulich Dentistry. Welcome to Drs. Sharat Pani, Shawn Steele, Liliani Vieira, Cecilia Dong and Trevor Thang.


Dr. Sharat Pani, BDS, MDS
Assistant Professor, Paediatric Dentistry

Dr. Pani has been appointed as an Assistant Professor, Paediatric Dentistry, at the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He is a paediatric and preventative dentist with a passion for special care dentistry, facilitating oral health care for patients with an impairment or disability. With international experience, he has worked in countries where special care dentistry is the responsibility of paediatric dentists.

Dr. Pani is a member of the International Association of Disability and Oral Health and has established multi-disciplinary protocols for treatment of adults with special health care needs. He strongly believes that good research is the backbone of successful clinical dentistry with more than 46 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He currently is an Associate Editor of the Saudi Dental Journal and serves as a reviewer for several prestigious journals, including the Journal of Dental Education.


Dr. Shawn Steele, BA, DDS, JD, MEd
Assistant Professor, Special Care & Community Dentistry

Dr. Steele has been appointed as an Assistant Professor, Special Care & Community Dentistry, at the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He is a dedicated dentist with a diverse set of skills and qualifications, including law and education degrees. His professional passion lies with addressing social justice in oral health care and improving access to care for under-served populations.

Dr. Steele has significant experience in providing clinical care to special populations, as well as developing sustainable models of care in London’s hospital-based clinics, where he serves as the city-wide Chief of Dentistry. His legal training provides insights into the complexities surrounding administrative and regulatory matters related to dental practice and practice administration.


Dr. Liliani A. Candido Vieira, DDS, MSc, PhD
Assistant Professor, Paediatric Dentistry

Dr. Vieira has been appointed as an Assistant Professor, Paediatric Dentistry, at the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. She holds a master’s degree in paediatric dentistry and a doctoral degree in health science. Dr. Vieria began her career in paediatric dentistry in 2002 at the Federal University of Goias, Brazil. Additionally, she was engaged as an advisor with the Program of Humanized Care for People with Special Needs and the Dental Sedation Centre – Prevention.

Dr. Vieira’s specialty involves preventative education and dental care for paediatric patients with special needs and providing dental care for children with a preventative approach, minimally invasive care and behaviour management for dental treatment.

 

t.jpgDr. Cecilia CS Dong, DMD, BSc (Dent.), MSc (Prosthodontics), FRCD(C)
Assistant Professor, Prosthodontics

Dr. Dong has been appointed as an Assistant Professor, Prosthodontics, in Schulich Dentistry. In addition to her BSc. in Dentistry and a DMD from the University of Manitoba, she has a M.Sc. in Prosthodontics from the University of Toronto, and obtained the FRCD(C) for Prosthodontics in Canada. Dr. Dong began her professional career as an Associate General Dentist in her hometown of Brandon, Manitoba (1996-98).

Subsequently she entered academia as an Assistant Professor (2001-08) and then Associate Professor (2008-18, tenured) in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. Dr Dong was active in research, teaching and service with multiple grants, patents, publications, presentations and awards. Dr. Dong also served as the Scientific Affairs Manager for 3M Oral Care in London, Ontario.

 

 

Untitled.pngDr. Trevor Thang, DDS, MSc (Oral Radiology), FRCD(C)
Assistant Professor and Chair, Oral Medicine and Radiology

Dr. Thang has been appointed as an Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine &Radiology, in Schulich Dentistry. He completed a D.D.S. and a M.Sc. in Oral Radiology, both from the University of Toronto.

He has also obtained the FRCD(C) for Oral Radiology in Canada, which designates him as a specialist in Oral Radiology. Dr. Thang joined us at the beginning of October, and is already an active member of our clinical team. We are excited to welcome Dr. Thang to Schulich Dentistry!
