Announcement: Dr. Jorge Burneo appointed as the Jack Cowin Chair in Epilepsy Research

I am pleased to announce Dr. Jorge Guillermo Burneo has been appointed as the Jack Cowin Chair in Epilepsy Research, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2023.

Dr. Burneo received his Doctor of Medicine from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru in 1996. He completed his neurology residency at The Henry Ford Health Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 1998, and his Fellowships in Clinical Neurophysiology and in Epilepsy at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 2002 and 2003, where he also obtained a Master’s in Public Health in Epidemiology in 2003. 

Dr. Burneo’s research interests focus on epidemiology of epilepsy and neuroimaging assessment of epileptic malformations of cortical development.  He has authored more than 120 published papers in the field of epilepsy and is currently funded by several provincial and private agencies. He lectures worldwide and has presented at several international forums including American Epilepsy Society (AES) Annual Meeting, International League Against Epilepsy International Epilepsy Congress and Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Annual Meeting.

Dr. Burneo joined the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS) at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 2005, where he is currently a Professor. He also holds a cross appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Burneo is Co-Director of the Epilepsy Program at Western and the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and Medical Director of the Electroencephalography Laboratory at the LHSC. He is the Co-Leader of EpLink, a research initiative from the Ontario Brain Institute and a member of the Provincial Epilepsy Strategy, an initiative from the Ontario Ministry of Health to improve epilepsy care in the Province. Dr. Burneo is currently appointed Scientist at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

Dr. Burneo was the recipient of the Angelika Hahn Award in Education, at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 2015, and was recently named one of TD’s 10 most influential Hispanic Canadians. He is also a Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Neurology.
