Dr. Lloyd McAninch

1920-1994

Dr. McAninch was born on a farm near Guelph, Ontario in 1920. His medical education took place at the University of Western Ontario (now Western University) and graduating with a medical degree in 1945 with postgraduate training from 1945-1953 in London, Ontario, with Royal College of Physicians Surgeons of Canada certification in 1953.  In 1954 Dr. McAninch returned to London, Ontario as Professor Angus McLachlin was establishing the original surgical divisions, and was appointed as the first Chief of Urology in London, Ontario.

In the late 1950’s, Dr. McAninch introduced new surgical procedures to the London community including cystectomy and ileoconduit for invasive bladder cancer.

In 1960, with the start of the Urology Residency Program, Dr. McAninch had his first urology resident, Dr. John K. Wyatt.  In the early 1960’s, together with colleagues and after starting with canine renal transplants, Dr. McAninch established the chronic dialysis program and renal transplant programs at Western University.  In 1972, he helped to establish and design the nephro-urological unit at University Hospital.

Dr. McAninch was President of the Canadian Urological Association (CUA) in 1975, President of the Northeastern Section of the American Urological Association (NSAUA) in 1974, and received the NSAUA’s Distinguished Service Award.

Unfortunately, ill health forced Dr. McAninch to retire prematurely in 1974.  As a tribute, the McAninch Library was established and still serves as a reference library for Urology residents.
