Dr. Lionel Reese

1925-1993
Dr. Lionel Reese was born in Guatemala in 1925. He graduated in Medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and received his Urology training at McGill University (1953). He established his Urology practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London in 1954. He also received specialty training in Nuclear Medicine. Thus, Dr. Reese was one of the earliest physicians to receive Fellowship in both Medicine and Surgery from both the Royal College Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. Reese also set up an independent radioimmunoassay laboratory within St. Joseph’s Hospital which subsequently led to the establishment of the Department of Nuclear Medicine there. He was also interested in management of renal failure and, aside from establishing the Renal Dialysis Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. Reese was one of the early renal transplantation team members in London, Ontario in the early 1960’s.
Dr. Reese also led the initiative in acquiring the first medical MRI scanner in Canada in 1982, installed at the Lawson Health Research Institute in London, Ontario.
Dr. Reese served as the President of the Ontario Medical Association in 1982.
