Community Partners

Students wearing masks (Discovery Healthcare Program)

Thank you for your interest in being a community partner and supporting Discovery Healthcare.

Discovery Healthcare is a one-week summer camp supported by the Office of Distributed Education, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and facilitated by students in diverse healthcare disciplines at Western University, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The purpose of Discovery Healthcare is to engage and mentor high school students throughout Southwestern Ontario to consider healthcare career opportunities available to them, learn basic clinical skills and have fun!

Students will engage in a variety of learning opportunities, allowing them to learn hands-on clinical skills, gain understanding of local health issues and social determinants of health, learn about the pathways to different careers, and see healthcare professionals in action through shadowing opportunities.

Discovery Healthcare aims to be a socially accountable initiative supported by the Office of Distributed Education, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. By fostering a passion for healthcare among our local youth, Discovery Healthcare will serve as an initiative to encourage sustainability of our future healthcare system.

Although all camps throughout the Distributed Education region will have the same overarching objectives, each camp will be created to highlight the unique attributes of healthcare systems in the local community where the camp is taking place.

Communities are asked to support the program by:

  • Assisting with venue selection
  • Assistance in coordinating local resources (health care professionals, hospital tours/Mock Disaster training)
  • Be available the week of Discovery Healthcare for local support
  • Promotion to students in community

Discovery Healthcare is intended to be a beneficial program for all stakeholders involved. Most importantly, we hope to provide information to high school students that they may not receive elsewhere, and allow them to gain important skills for their future while having fun.

Benefits for communities

  • Educate young students about the healthcare disparities that exist in their community
  • Inspire youth to pursue healthcare related careers and possibly increase the number of healthcare providers in their communities in the future
  • Increase healthcare education and mentorship opportunities for students in the community
  • Introduce current healthcare students to your community
