Event: Surgical and Anesthesiology Education - Dr. Alan Schwartz

Dr. Alan Schwartz will present Surgical and Anesthesiology Education: What's Next? at the upcoming Grand Rounds for the Departments of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, held with the Centre for Education Research and Innovation (CERI) on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 via Microsoft Teams. 

Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the development and current state of the field of surgical and anesthesiology education
  2. List five research frontiers for surgical and anesthesiology education in the coming years
  3. Explain the importance of education research in anaesthesiology and surgical specialties


Alan Schwartz, PhD, JD is the Michael Reese Endowed Professor of Medical Education at the University of Illinois Chicago Department of Medical Education, with additional appointments in Pediatrics, Medicine, and the School of Law.  He is a cognitive psychologist specializing in medical decision making, and a lawyer focused on health equity, law, and policy.  Since 2011, he has been the Director of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Longitudinal Educational Assessment Research Network (APPD LEARN), a national network of hundreds of Pediatrics residency and fellowship programs that conduct collaborative research. Most recently, he founded and directs a medical legal partnership to provide services to patients and families at two UIC medical clinics with health-harming legal needs.
