Dr. Shepherd graduated in 1963 from the University of  Western Ontario School of Medicine.  After initial training in the McLachlin General Surgery program, he began his urology training with Dr. Lloyd McAninch.  At this time, the renal transplantation program was established at Victoria Hospital, later to become part of the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).  Dr. Shepherd's urology training was completed in Montreal.  While there, he obtained FRCSC (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada) qualification and also MSc (Masters of Science) at McGill University under the supervision of Dr. Yosh Taguchi.

In 1971, an R.Samual McLaughlin Foundation Travelling Fellowship provided exposure to pediatric urology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and renal transplantation at St. Mary's Hospital in London, UK.  These became areas of special interest in a career which embraced all areas of practice common to general urology.
