REB Requirements
Western Research has clear guidance on when student work with human participants, or their data/biological materials, requires Research Ethics Board (REB) oversight. This is applicable not only to research activities but also to pedagogical activities such as course projects or major research projects.
REB Requirements for Student Research and Pedagogical Activities
If you are conducting human-participant research, you are required to complete the TCPS2 CORE training module.
Thesis supervisors must ensure that any thesis-related work involving human participants, and their data/biological materials, is submitted for REB review before the student begins.
The thesis supervisor must act as the Principal Investigator (PI) because students are not eligible to serve as PIs or hold research accounts (see PI eligibility criteria).
If uncertain, contact the Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE) at ethics@uwo.ca before any project begins.
