Purpose

The Advanced Neural Circuits Group (ANCG) aims to crack the circuit mechanisms that give rise to human cognition and sensorimotor function. Many of these functions emerge from primate-specific circuit architectures that are poorly represented in other model systems and difficult to study in humans. By directly studying and carefully modulating neural circuits in non-human primates, the ANCG will shed new light on non-human primate brain function and foster translational research focused on neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Background and Rationale

Deciphering non-human primate neural circuits is essential for understanding human brain function and developing effective treatments for neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Non-human primates provide an indispensable link between neural mechanism and effective treatment because their brain organization, synaptic physiology, neurochemical modulation, and behavioural repertoires closely mirror the human condition. Western possesses unique resources, infrastructure, and interdisciplinary expertise to tighten the link between non-human primate models and human-based approaches, creating a powerful translational pipeline that spans from neural mechanisms to complex behaviour to clinical interventions.

Objectives

  • Translate research insights into diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
