Marlys Koschinsky, PhD, was elected as Co-Chair of the 2022 Gordon Research Conference on Lipid Metabolism.

Dr. Bob Kiaii has been re-appointed as the Ray and Margaret Elliott Chair in Surgical Innovation in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Kiaii’s role includes building teams in advancing technology changes in surgery; contributing to the advancement of simulation and simulation-based training at Western; participating in the establishment of the Biomedical Devices Institute in London and in fostering relationships with the medical device industry. Rebecca Sullivan, MSc Candidate, Kara Ruicci, MD/PhD Candidate, Christine Caron, MSc Candidate, and Amanda Oakie, PhD Candidate, each received the Dr. Frederick Winnet Luney Graduate Scholarship. 

Dr. Jennifer Mandzia, Assistant Professor of Neurology, received a 2018 Recognition and Reward Award from the London Health Sciences Centre Professional Staff Organization. The award recognizes an individual who "enables exemplary patient care, teaching and research through leadership, collaboration and/or innovation."

Tara Condos, PhD'18, and Bart Kolendowski, PhD'18, completed successful PhD defenses. Condos was supervised by Gary Shaw, PhD. Her thesis is entitled, "Conformational Arrangements of UbcH7-Ubiquitin with OspG and Parkin.” Kolendowski was supervised by Joe Torchia, PhD. His thesis is entitled, "The Role of Thymine-DNA Glycosylase in Transcriptional Regulation."

Sanna Abbasi received a Best Poster Presentation Award at the Canadian Symposium on Telemeres & Genome Integrity.

Matthew Berg, PhD Candidate with the Department of Biochemistry, received the 2018 WORLDiscoveries Scholarship for Commercialization/Entrepreneurship. Read the complete announcement

Kevin Ho received a CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Undergraduate Summer Studentship Award.

David Edgell, PhD, Acting Chair of the Department of Biochemistry, was featured on the SynBio Canada website for research in synthetic biology, specifically mobile genetic elements.

Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario (AMOSO) Opportunities Fund

The Opportunities Fund is a local peer reviewed competition with submission deadlines of mid-April and the end of September. It uses an allocation from the London Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) Alternative Funding Plan (AFP) Agreement and funds physician compensation for approved projects one to three years in length in support of new researchers. To date over $13.1 million has been funded.
