Enhanced Skills Programs

The applications for 2023-2024 closed on September 14, 2022 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time. It will reopen for 2024-2025 in August 2023.

Category 1 Programs include:

• Sport & Exercise Medicine

Category 2 Programs include:

• Academic Family Medicine
• Child Health
• Chronic Diseases Management
• Enhanced Skills - Individualized Program
• Hospitalist
• Obstetrics & Women's Health
• Family Medicine Oncology
• Primary Care Rheumatology

There are 22 Enhanced Skills positions available that are split between the positions offered to those applicants that are certificate-eligible by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

To be eligible, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled in postgraduate year 2 (PGY-2) in a Canadian Family Medicine residency program accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program in the United States, you must join the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) as a resident member and provide evidence that you are registered in an accredited program.

Ministry of Health (MOH) Re-entry positions are available for in Enhanced Skills.  Interested applicants need to apply through the MOH program and must meet eligibility criteria set by the MOH.  Western does not disclose individual program capacities, but will review applications once received.

Application Timeline (for 2023/2024):

• Application opens: August 2, 2022
• Application closes: September 14, 2022 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time
• Interviews: 
  • Category 1 Programs Interview Date: November 17 & 18, 2022
  • Category 2 Interview Period: September 15, 2022 to December 1, 2022
• Category 1 CaRMS Match Date: December 14, 2022
• Category 2 Match Date: September 15, 2022 to December 1, 2022 (rolling process)
• Start Date: July 1, 2023
• End Date: June 30, 2024

Application Process:

• Please note, you can only match to a single Category 1 program through CaRMS. Should you match to a Category 1 program through CaRMS, this is a binding contract and you will need to relinquish or decline any subsequent Category 2 offers you receive. Should you receive and accept a Category 2 offer PRIOR to the CaRMS rank order list deadline, you will need to withdraw from the CaRMS match. Between the rank order list deadline and match day, you cannot accept any Category 2 offers. Any circumvention of this policy will result in a match violation and may result in disciplinary actions.
• All positions are subject to the availability of funding. We are not currently accepting internationally sponsored residents.
• Applicants are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible because the reference letter requests are generated electronically and the system will only email them once the application has been submitted. Out of respect to your referees, please submit your application at least 3 weeks before the deadline. You can only submit one application per program that you are applying to. 
• "Chrome" is the recommended browser.
