Women's Health

During this month you will experience a broad range of clinical experiences specific to the care of women patients. This rotation is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and to encourage helpful attitudes around women's health issues. The intent of this month is to:

  • Increase resident KNOWLEDGE in clinical areas specific to/relevant to women's health. This is to include, but not be limited to Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Infertility Investigation and Management, Urogynaecology, Osteoporosis, Care of Immigrant Women, Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence, Genetics Applicable to Primary Care
  • Increase resident SKILLS in clinical areas specific to women's health. This is to include, but not be limited to family planning techniques, urodynamic testing, acute sexual assault and domestic violence assessment and treatment and acute crisis/long them counselling skills for use with women with a history of sexual assualt/abuse
  • Challenge/encourage ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS necessary for the effective care of female patients. Residents will be encouraged to consider women at risk for specific medical illnesses (eg. osteoporosis, breast disease, etc.), women at risk for a number of unique social health determinants, the role of the family physician as responder to the broad spectrum of female health needs and as a resource to her/his female practice population and the continuous nature of the patient/family physician relationship as best suited to meeting the short-term and long-term needs of women patients.

ALL ELECTIVES LISTED ON THE WEBSITE AND ANY REQUESTS FOR ELECTIVES IN LONDON HOSPITALS ARE ARRANGED BY SHARON STORY, DEPT. OF FAMILY MEDICINE, WESTERN (WE HAVE A CITY-WIDE SCHEDULING COMMITTEE THAT DEALS WITH THE CORE AND ELECTIVE LONDON HOSPITAL ROTATIONS).
