The learning objectives of the rheumatology elective are follows:

  1. To identify differences between inflammatory and mechanical joint pain or soft tissue disorders.
  2. To gain a better understanding about the clinical criteria of rheumatologic diseases and interpretation  of laboratory and radiographic testing. 
  3. To gain exposure to patients who have diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthropathy, polymyalgia rheumatica, connective tissue diseases, vasculitis, or inflammatory myositis to name a few.   
  4. To understand treatments, including novel therapeutics, within the field of rheumatology.
  5. To learn and practice joint aspiration/injection techniques. 

Expectations: Residents are expected to see new rheumatology consultations in the office, Monday through Friday, and occasionally inpatient consults, at Windsor Regional Hospital at either campus. 

Call: There is daytime call for hospital consults but no night time or weekend call responsibilities.

Scheduling: 1 resident per block.  Blocks may be 2 or 4 weeks in length.
