This community based outpatient experience occurs primarily in a private office setting with two physiatrists.  Residents will be exposed to patients with a wide variety of neurological, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diagnoses.  Practical approaches to diagnosis and management will be emphasized.  Opportunities exist to refine physical examination techniques as well as soft tissue and articular injection techniques.
There are no call responsibilities.  There are occasional inpatient consultations at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.  Hospital based grand rounds occur weekly on Fridays over lunch.  A newly built multidisciplinary Family Medicine centre with 18 Family physicians is also nearby.  Owen Sound is a rural site for the McMaster Family Medicine residency program.

Subsidized resident accommodations exist one block away from the clinic in downtown Owen Sound, a small city of 20,000 residents on Georgian Bay.  There are ample outdoor recreational opportunities and excellent indoor athletic facilities nearby.

Scheduling: Electives of 4 weeks in duration are available for a single resident at a time 12 months of the year. Maximum 4 PGY1 or PGY2 residents per year.

PLEASE NOTE: ELECTIVES MUST BE FOUR WEEKS (1 MONTH) IN DURATION (PART OF A MONTH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE). ALL ELECTIVES LISTED BELOW AND ANY REQUESTS FOR ELECTIVES IN LONDON HOSPITALS ARE ARRANGED BY SHARON STORY, DEPT. OF FAMILY MEDICINE, WESTERN (WE HAVE A CITY-WIDE SCHEDULING COMMITTEE THAT DEALS WITH THE CORE AND ELECTIVE LONDON HOSPITAL ROTATIONS).
