The Paediatric Emergency Department is the major referral centre for paediatric emergency and acute consultative care for Southwestern Ontario. The patient population is 39,000 visits/year from the broad variety of presentations of children with acute illness and injury. A variety of rotations from Family Medicine participate in the postgraduate program.

PGY1 - a minimum 4 wk. exposure as a component of the core paediatric rotation
PGY2 - one block elective rotations are available through the family medicine elective program and are subject to availability
PGY3 - a core one block rotation as a component of the CCFP (EM) program. Other electives available on request.

The electives consist of clinical emergency medicine exposure of 15 & 16 - 8 hour shifts in a month’s rotation. Residents will be assigned to a variety of day, evening and nighttime shifts. Residents are given graded responsibilities within the department consistent with their knowledge, skills, and interests. Education sessions, held every Monday morning, include mock arrest workshops and monthly rounds. The rotation provides a tremendous opportunity to discuss acute paediatric problems directly with paediatric emergency medicine specialists within the department, and the exposure to a wide variety of procedures practiced in paediatric emergency medicine.

Scheduling: Core rotation for PGY1’s; subject to availability for PGY2’s
