Contact person: Dr. Andrea Alarie c/o Gwyneth Jalbert (gwynjalbert@rogers.com)

Grand River Hospital has approximately 4300 deliveries annually (11-12 every 24 hours/average). Level 2 plus community hospital with 14 obstetricians and 8 family physicians who provide obstetrical care. There are also 3 Midwifery practices. This is one of the largest community obstetrical units in Canada.

Our population is approximately 80% low-risk and 20% high risk. With in-house on-call pediatricians, we manage patients who are 32 weeks gestation and greater. We are within about one hour of tertiary care centers in Hamilton, Toronto and London. Extremely high risk patients are transferred to one of these centers. The Cesarean section rate is about 26% and the epidural rate is about 55%.

The model of care in the Childbirth Program is single room LBRP (Labour, Birth, Recovery, Postpartum) model. Women who are low-risk and have vaginal births remain in one room for their entire postpartum stay of 6 - 24 hours. Women who have Cesarean deliveries are transferred to the antenatal, postpartum unit, which is located on the same floor.

Residents, on-call for 4-6 shifts (24 hour) per month, will see/do approximately 55-65 deliveries. Nine obstetricians provide opportunities for the residents to spend time in their offices, seeing obstetrical and gyne. patients. There is also a presentation given by the lactation consultants and an opportunity to attend the in-patient teaching session. There is the opportunity to observe circumcisions in a family doctor's office.

Orientation is provided on the first working day of the rotation. This includes orientation to the program, and a tour of the hospital. The residents, as a group, present obstetrical Education Rounds once a month, on the final Thursday of their rotation.

Scheduling for on-call and office visits is completed by the coordinator and is e-mailed 2 weeks before the rotation begins. Please advise as soon as possible about any holiday or educational leave requests.

Off-site accommodation (3 bedroom house behind the hospital) is available from the Medical Staff Office . -519-749-4300 Ext. 2525. This is available for off-duty time, as an on-call room is provided on the Childbirth floor. This house is shared with residents from other specialties, so early notification of need is advisable.

Scheduling: Can take 4 residents monthly. (Incl. FM residents doing core Ob rotation)
