The goal of this rotation is to acquire a thorough knowledge of the range of gastrointestinal diseases and develop clinical skills to accurately assess and manage patients with gastrointestinal disorders.

The medical resident will work closely with the attending gastroenterologist both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. In the inpatient setting, the resident will be on call with the gastroenterologist and would be expected to obtain a detailed, comprehensive history and perform physical examination on a wide variety of acute gastrointestinal disorders such as acute pancreatitis, GI bleed, complications of liver cirrhosis, biliary disorders. The resident will then present the cases to the attending physician and discuss the management strategies. The resident is also expected to follow-up on the inpatients.

In the outpatient clinic, the resident will see both new consults and follow-up patients with common gastrointestinal issues such as GERD, Inflammatory bowel disease and Irritable bowel syndrome. The resident will also become familiarized with the practice guidelines and screening guidelines for various gastrointestinal malignancies.

The resident will have opportunity to observe and gain experience in common gastrointestinal procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy with polypectomies and observe specialized procedures such as ERCP and therapeutic procedures such as esophageal band ligation and esophageal dilatation.

One day out of the week the resident will be on call with the attending gastroenterologist. The resident will attend at least 2 full days of out patient clinics and two full days of endoscopy. The resident is encouraged to attend our weekly multidisciplinary radiology rounds where various GI cases will be presented and discussed with the gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists.

By the end of the rotation the resident should have acquired sufficient knowledge and experience to be comfortable with assessing and managing common gastrointestinal disorders.
