Emergency Medicine - LONDON (LHSC-South Street and Victoria Hospital)

Contact person: Dr. Ryan Arbeau

The Victoria Hospital and University Hospital Emergency Departments of the London Health Sciences Center are busy tertiary care departments that see a wide variety of patient problems, encompassing the full spectrum of general and subspecialty medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, gynecology, and psychiatry. The department is a regional Poison Information Center, the base hospital for the London Paramedic Program the referral centre for psychiatric emergencies and the designated facility for patients with multiple system trauma.

The departments are staffed by full-time certified Emergency physicians and a monthly complement of at least 16 house staff, ranging in experience from PGY1 to the PGY5 level. Residents undertaking an elective in Emergency Medicine take a regular place in the house staff Emergency Department schedule. In an average month, this would entail upto 18 – 8 hour shifts scheduled by the senior EM resident including day, afternoon, and evening blocks. Trainees can expect to work weekends. Residents can expect one-on-one clinical teaching while on shift in the department and an opportunity to improve their procedural skills. Residents are required to complete on shift evaluations which count toward an end of rotation summative evaluation from an assigned staff EM physician. Residents will be asked to evaluate one or two of their teaching faculty in Emergency Medicine and also complete an online survey on their teaching/learning experience.

Vacation requests are honored on a first come first served basis. Weekly Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds are held from September to June each year. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact Dr. Bhimani at the above telephone number.

Scheduling: Can take a number of Family Medicine residents evenly disbursed throughout the year.
