Celebrating your achievements 

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Thomas Freeman for receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in Family Medicine Research from the College of Family Physicians of Canada. 

After earning his medical degree in 1976, Dr.  Freeman embarked on a journey of practicing comprehensive family medicine lasting more than 40 years.

Dr. Freeman has been a full-time faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University since 1989 and was appointed professor emeritus in May 2019. He remains active as a research adjunct professor at the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine at Western University.

His current research focuses on the nature and outcomes of common symptoms in family practice, vaccine data quality, and virtual care.  Dr. Freeman received this honour at the Family Medicine Forum on November 8, 2023.

The Diabetes Alliance here at the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Alexandria Ratzki-Leewing as a Research Scientist, continuing her leadership of the Hypoglycemia program. Dr. Ratzki-Leewing is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.  Congratulations Alex.

Gillian Young, a PhD student (supervisor Dr. Maria Mathews) was the recipient of a 2023 Distinguished Trainee Research Award at the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) annual meeting for her Master’s thesis work: “An Evaluation of Physician Retention Bonuses in Newfoundland and Labrador”.

The Lifestyle Research Team (PI: Dr. Robert Petrella) would like to acknowledge Marisa Kfrerer, a Graduate Research Assistant with the Lifestyle Research Team, and an upper-year MScOT/PhD student at Western, for being selected as one of five trainee stipend recipients for the 2023 NACPRG Annual meeting.

Marisa delivered an oral presentation at the meeting entitled “Hockey FIT for Women (HFIT for Women): Evaluating reach and implementation of a gender-sensitized healthy lifestyle program”. Marisa has been part of the Lifestyle Research Team since the fall of 2018 in various capacities and has made important contributions particularly within the Hockey Fans in Training research program.
