Undergraduate Program Report

Happy New Year from Family Medicine Undergraduate Education. As we hope for what 2021 will bring, I want to extend a personal thank you for everything you continue to do for your patients, communities and learners as we hit the crest of wave two.

Despite the challenges of COVID, placements for third year clerks and fourth year electives continue to go well. A huge thank you to our administrative assistant, Michele Vanderspank, for all her hard work connecting with our faculty and arranging placements. The fourth year elective period will finish January 31, 2021 and CaRMS will be next up for the fourth years.

Next month, the Department of Family Medicine will be involved in pre-clerkship teaching during the Family Medicine Transition to Clerkship week from February 22-26, led by Dr. Andrew Hemphill. Lecturers and panelists have been recruited to deliver sessions on back pain, headaches., fatigue, common infections, preventative care, and choosing wisely.

In the clerkship program, an additional two week selective has been added in August 2021 to allow students to complete make-up time, or gain additional exposure, for areas where time may have been missed due to COVID-19.

As always, if you have questions, concerns, ideas, or would like to get more involved in undergraduate education in family medicine, please contact me at smckay28@uwo.ca.
