Dr. Rob Leeper appointed Program Director, Surgical Foundations

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Rob Leeper to the role of Program Director, Surgical Foundations effective July 1, 2022.  The Surgical Foundations Program provides classroom and clinical training in the fundamental skills of surgery for residents in the majority of surgical specialties, concurrent with training in the surgical specialty.  Dr. Leeper succeeds Dr. Julie Ann Van Koughnett who has been leading the program for the past five years and its implementation of Competence by Design (CBD).

Dr. Leeper joined the Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Surgery in August 2015. After graduating from Queen’s University with a BSc (distinction) in Life Sciences, Dr. Leeper received his medical degree and general surgery residency training at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. Dr. Leeper continued his training at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, completing a Critical Care Fellowship. He also completed a Trauma and Acute Care Fellowship and a Masters of Education in the Health Professions degree at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Dr. Leeper has presented both nationally and internationally and contributed to multiple book chapters and peer reviewed journals. He received an Academic Merit Award the last two consecutive years, recognizing his outstanding achievements in education and was awarded a Department of Surgery Clerkship Faculty Teaching Award in 2017, 2018 and 2020. His clinical research interests include trauma and acute care surgery, and medical education in the field of simulation.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Leeper on his appointment to this key leadership role in the Department of Surgery.
