Research Report

Visiting Professor

The Centre for Studies in Family Medicine and the Department of Family Medicine were pleased to welcome Professor Christian Mallen on his recent visit to us from the United Kingdom. Professor Mallen is the Head of the School of Medicine at Keele University, and an NIHR Research Professor in General Practice. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Clinical Informatics, in addition to leading Keele’s Global Health Research and serving as the Director of the Wellcome Trust Doctoral Training Programme for Primary Care. Professor Mallen’s research interests focus on improving the management of common rheumatological complaints in primary care. During his visit, Professor Mallen delivered a well-received lecture entitled “Pain and Prejudice”. Using his research on gout as an example, Professor Mallen’s presentation demonstrated the importance of practical, applied research in answering questions of interest to primary care practitioners, including those focused on patient experience and the most effective treatment for pain reduction in adults with acute gout.
