Chair's Message

Happy new year to all. The new  year is a great time to reflect on the hopes and challenges for the year(s) ahead.

As I write this, I am preparing to accept the offer of a second five-year term as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. I very much appreciate the confidence of the selection committee and the Dean in my ability to lead the Department over the next five years.

I have several goals in mind for Family Medicine, which I can outline briefly as follows:

  • Establish a strategic plan for the Department that brings together the clinical, educational and research goals of our department into a cohesive mission that we can all strive for.
  • Establish a renewed governance structure for our Department that enhances communication, and encourages and incorporates community-based faculty members.
  • Follow through on a successful faculty recruitment plan that brings new expertise and enthusiasm to our department, supports and enhances our Graduate Studies program and research agenda, and provides strong support for scholarly work by our clinical faculty.
  • Develop a robust clinical practice plan for the Department that respects comprehensive family medicine practice and special interests in family medicine, and which establishes clear expectations, and a solid path for our academic department to remain a leader in family medicine education.

With your help we can enjoy productive and satisfying years ahead, as we work on these goals and others, and maintain our position as one of the leading departments of family medicine in Canada.

As always I welcome your comments and feedback at: stephen.wetmore@schulich.uwo.ca.
