RESET IT Study (REmission Studies Evaluating Type 2 Diabetes – Intermittent Insulin Therapy)

RESET IT  is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether intermittent intensive insulin therapy (IIT) is an effective therapeutic strategy that can preserve pancreatic beta-cell function and maintain glycemic control early in the course of type 2 diabetes.

Currently, we are seeking the assistance of primary care physicians to help identify potential participants for the RESET IT trial. This is a CIHR-funded multi-centre trial, testing a novel strategy for preventing the progressive worsening of pancreatic beta-cell function and glycemic control that characterizes the natural history of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). It will be testing whether intermittent insulin therapy for 2 weeks every 3 months can maintain the improvement in beta-cell function induced by initial short-term IIT.

For this 2 year-long study, we are looking for adults aged 30-80, with T2DM of 5 years duration or less, who are on either metformin or diet only.

Beyond patient recruitment, opportunities will also exist for Department of Family Medicine  practitioners to learn and even participate in this RCT - if interested (no previous RCT experience necessary).

Presentations detailing RESET IT will be made at the Family Medical Centres , or for additional information, please contact Dr. Stewart Harris or Dr. Sonja Reichert at 519-858-5028.
