Welcome Dr. Hao Li
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hao Li as a new Clinician Teacher and Assistant Professor effective August 1, 2026.
Dr. Li obtained his M.D. at Western University, Windsor Campus after completing a B.Sc. at the University of Toronto. This was followed initially by 3 years of Neurosurgery residency at the University of Saskatchewan. At this point, Dr. Li decided to transfer to Pathology and completed a residency in Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology at Western University. He went on to further complete an extended residency/fellowship in Neuropathology at the same institution.
Dr. Li’s academic interest in Medical Education was shaped by his entire training journey. As a medical graduate of the Windsor Campus, he had first-hand experience of how medicine works in the community, and how to systematically train medical learners to serve community practices, which come with their own unique challenges. Additionally, as a medical student, he was involved in research to teach procedural competence. He was the first Pathology resident at Western University under the new Competence by Design (CBD) educational framework established by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. As the “pioneer” in this new system, he contributed significantly to the design of his own residency curriculum while following the standards of the Royal College. He provided continuous guidance to departmental faculty and co-trainees on navigating CBD. He served on multiple educational committees from local to national levels. During his training he also led a research project on trainee assessment variability. He is planning on pursuing higher-level training in educational theoretical frameworks and evidence-based teaching, having an appreciation for mentoring and coaching the learner as a “whole person”.
Dr. Li recently accepted a term on the Ontario Association of Pathologists (OAP) Board of Directors, as well as the Director of Education for the association.
Outside of work, Dr. Li enjoys time with his family – his wife Tara and sons Ezra (almost 4-years-old) and Elias (only 2 months!). He enjoys classical music as well.
