At the university level, our faculty teach in the Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education and the Undergraduate Medical Education programs. We offer research-based graduate degrees (MSc, PhD and GDip) along with a Master of Clinical Science-Pathologists’ Assistant program, the first accredited program of its kind in Canada. We have a tradition of evolving our educational offerings to incorporate new disciplines and approaches, as evidenced by our implementation of the first comprehensive One Health education program in Canada and more recently a Basic Medical Sciences module in Medical Bioinformatics. We have Royal College accredited residency programs in Anatomical Pathology and Neuropathology. We also offer advanced training: a Surgical Pathology fellowship program and an Area of Focused Competence diploma in Cytopathology.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is an integral part of the vibrant Western research enterprise. Our faculty members have expertise in a broad array of basic, translational, and clinical research across multiple themes, which reflects the breadth of our faculty complement. Areas of research excellence include cardiovascular, respiratory health and metabolic diseases; cancer biology; infection, immunity and inflammation; pathobiology of neurologic diseases; and bioinformatics.
