LHSC Becomes a Provincial Genomic Testing Centre Through PGLN-OH
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) Molecular Diagnostics Division has officially joined Ontario's network of genomic testing laboratories, becoming one of only five centres in the province offering clinical genomic testing through the Provincial Genetics Laboratory Network of Ontario (PGLN-OH). This milestone marks LHSC's transition into a genomic testing centre and expands access to advanced genetic diagnostics for patients across Ontario. Effective September, 2026, LHSC launched its first genome-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) test, providing genetic testing for chronic kidney disease (CKD) using multigene panels derived from a whole genome sequencing (WGS) backbone. Testing is performed on the Illumina NovaSeq platform, bringing state-of-the-art genomic technology to the region.
The adoption of a genome-first approach represents a major advancement in molecular diagnostics. By leveraging WGS, a much larger number of genes and variant types can be evaluated simultaneously compared with traditional targeted NGS testing methods, improving diagnostic yield, expanding the range of conditions that can be investigated and creating new opportunities for research and discovery. CKD is the first clinical indication available through this program, with additional disease-focused genomic tests planned in the near future. Through participation in PGLN-OH, LHSC-PALM continues to strengthen its role in delivering innovative, high-quality genetic testing for patients with rare and inherited diseases across the province.
