Congratulations Jennifer Kerkhof winner of the 2026 Bhayana Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine
Jennifer Kerkhof, Senior Medical Laboratory Technologist in Molecular Diagnostics, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Drs. Vipin and Bhooma Bhayana Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine.
The award recognizes Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, and Medical Laboratory Science students who have demonstrated outstanding dedication, innovation, and impact in advancing the quality of laboratory medicine. The award celebrates extraordinary contributions in procedural innovation, improvements in diagnostic accuracy, and advancements in patient care.
Throughout her career, and particularly over the past year, Jennifer has exemplified the qualities this award was created to recognize. She has been instrumental in advancing Molecular Diagnostic testing through the development, validation, and implementation of leading-edge technologies. Her contributions have helped expand testing capabilities, modernize lab workflows, and strengthen LHSC's position as a leader in Molecular Diagnostics.
Jennifer has played a foundational role in standardizing and optimizing numerous Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) assays at LHSC. She has also helped modernize molecular workflows by completing the validation of a new automated version of DNA methylation analysis software. Her work has improved diagnostic capabilities and serves as a model for other laboratories across Canada. In addition, Jennifer has provided technical leadership in the development and implementation of epigenomic testing around the world, helping bring innovative approaches to diagnosing rare genetic conditions. In the last year, Jennifer led the validation and implementation of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) testing for lung cancer. This innovative liquid biopsy technology provides new diagnostic opportunities for patients who may not be able to undergo traditional tissue biopsy, helping expand access to precision medicine and improving patient care.
Equally important is Jennifer’s commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and quality. She is widely respected for sharing her expertise, supporting colleagues, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Her ability to translate complex scientific advances into practical applications has had a lasting impact on both our lab and the patients we serve.
