Departmental Awards

A graduate student who is currently enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in year 2 or beyond of their Pathology graduate program. A student can receive this award only once.

Application Deadline: February 15.

Applications must be submitted using the online application form. Applications will be evaluated by the Graduate Education Committees of the Research-based and Pathologists’ Assistant programs.

The emphasis will be on choosing a candidate who demonstrates a high level of academic achievement, excellence in research work including publications, presentations at meetings, and leadership contributions through Departmental and community activities during graduate study in pathology. A student can receive this award only once.

The value is $1,400.00 per award (maximum one per year). The Graduate Education Committee(s), however, may change the amount or number of awards.

All graduate students registered in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine program (full-time and part-time students) at time of attendance and participation.

Students must have the abstract accepted for presentation at a National or International Meeting (in
person) as the presenting author.

Proof of acceptance must have been received (based on email date) within three months up to, but not including, the quarterly deadline.

Applications will be evaluated four times a year with quarterly deadlines of February 15, May, 15,
August 15, and November 15; e.g., if you received an abstract decision on April 1, then you must apply for the May 15 deadline. If you notified on May 15, then you can apply on August 15

Applications to this award must be submitted to the Department using the Web-based form provided online, including proof of abstract acceptance, a copy of the submitted abstract, and a support letter from the supervisor(s) attesting to the quality of the conference. Priority will be given to students who have not received a Dutkevich Award previously. In cases where a student has already received a Dutkevich Award, the abstract in the new application needs to be sufficiently different from previously/awarded abstract.

Applications will be reviewed by the Research-Based and Pathologists' Assistant) Graduate Education Committee using the criteria:

• Quality of abstract
• Preference will be given to international over national conferences, and oral over poster presentations
• Conferences should be peer-reviewed events with an established reputation in the scientific community (See How to spot a predatory conference, and what science needs to about them: a guide). This will be assessed from the supervisor's letter of support.

The maximum award amount will be $1,000.00 per student per year (i.e., you may not receive the award twice in the same academic year). A maximum of one award will be given out in each quarterly competition. The Graduate Education Committee may change the amount or number of awards.

Applications must be submitted using the online application form. Students may apply to the Dr. Fredrick Winnet Luney Research Award to cover the costs of attending and presenting at a scientific conference or other research activities that enhance their graduate training. For conference presentation, applicants will need to show proof of an accepted abstract. Applicants may also apply to this award to cover the costs of workshops (for example iPS generation, NGS data analyses, writing workshops, teaching workshops), courses (above and beyond what is covered by student’s tuition at Western), technical training (for example, multichannel FACS), and new elements of research incorporated into thesis projects etc.

The Graduate Education Committee of the research-based or MClSc Program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will select the recipient. Preference will be given to applicants who pursue a collaborative research between basic science and clinical science. A student can receive this award only once during their graduate program training in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.  

The value is $2,100.00 per award (maximum 4 per year). The Graduate Education Committee(s), however, may change the amount or number of awards.

Preference will be given to applicants who pursue a collaborative research between basic science and clinical science. A student can receive this award only once during their graduate program training in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The student’s total financial package (stipend) will be adjusted accordingly.  

Value: 4 at $6,700.00 (maximum three awards for the research-based and one for MClSc Program per year). The Graduate Education Committee(s), however, may change the amount or number of awards.

One prize will be given per year to a graduate student who has published a first-authored article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

• The work published must be part of the student's own thesis (or equivalent) work and have been performed during the student's current program of study (MSc/MClSc-PA and PhD).  In the case of work initiated prior to the current program of study (e.g., an undergraduate thesis prior to graduate degree), the applicant must provide a description of what parts of the study were carried out before and after the current degree. 
  
  
• The article must have a publication date (not the date of preprint release, acceptance, or advance access) in the calendar year immediately prior to the year applying for the award, e.g., an application submitted in 2024 must be associated with a publication in 2023.
  
  
• A student can only receive this prize no more than two years during their tenure in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Graduate Program.

Applications will be reviewed by the Graduate Education Committee. The prize will be given out based on the significance and impact of the published work and not by default in cases where only one nomination is received. If no nominations are received, there will be no prize.

The value is $1,000 + graduate student’s name engraved on a plaque. The Graduate Education Committee(s), however, may change the amount or number of awards.

The application for the One Health Graduate Scholarship is initiated by the student and must include:

• (1) a personal statement, (2) a one-page summary of the research project, (3) a summary of progress to date, (4) an updated CV, and (5) copies of the student’s transcript(s).

The Graduate Education Committee of the research-based program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will select the recipient. A student can only receive this award once during their graduate program training in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The student’s total funding package will be adjusted accordingly.

In any given academic year, only one student may be funded. The award will be for one (1) year (3 terms) only, with a maximum value of $5,000 per year. The Graduate Education Committee, however, may change the amount or number of awards.

Student stipend funds will be disbursed through the Student Centre. Funding will be considered part of the student’s overall funding package and will be prorated based on other student funding and awards (e.g., GTA, Tri-Council scholarships, internal awards, and other scholarships).
