Time spent during residency learning how to engage with someone’s experience of illness can feel like time better spent buying groceries, sleeping, or finally working out. With the focus of medicine on diagnosis and treatment, however, there are few opportunities to appreciate what our patients go through, or what we experience as we care for them. Narrative medicine and reflective practice have developed as a means to address the need for care to be a relational, meaning-making process. This half-day will introduce the concepts of narrative skill and reflective capacity, and their intersection with the needs of patients and caregivers during illness.
