London makes the Top Ten for Hospital-Based Research in Canada

Thursday, October 31, 2013

A new report shows London ranks among the top ten research hospitals in Canada. According to the 2013 edition of, "Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals List," Lawson Health Research Institute, the research arm of London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, is ranked ninth in the country.

Each year, "Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals List" ranks hospitals across Canada based on their research income for the year. This includes funds received from all sources, both internal and external, to support research at the organization. According to the report, Lawson received just over $103 million in research income in 2012, a 1.1% increase from 2011.

Much of Lawson's continued success is thanks to ongoing local support for health research innovation. For example, earlier this year the City of London recently created a $10 million Innovation and Commercialization Fund. This fund will support the new Medical Innovation and Commercialization Network, a joint initiative between London's hospitals, hospital foundations, university, and health research institutes, including Lawson.

Outside of the city, however, the number of funding opportunities continues to shrink. Further support from the provincial and federal governments, and from industry, is needed to ensure London's future as a national leader in health research.

"Lawson is navigating the difficult economic environment well," says Dr. David Hill, Lawson's Scientific Director. "Scientists are identifying and competing effectively for a more diverse range of funding sources, including international funds. In line with federal and provincial government direction we have increased the value of our collaborations with industry by 40% so far this year."
