Short Biography:

Tresah Antaya is a third-year PhD candidate in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She previously earned a BA in psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University, a post-graduate certificate in project management from Fanshawe College, and an MPH from Lakehead University. Before pursuing her doctoral degree, Tresah worked as a research associate at Western University, researching epilepsy risk factors and health services use using population-based epidemiological research methods.

Abstract:

Epilepsy is the third most common neurological disease in Canada, affecting approximately 1 in 200 residents. Although there are many causes of epilepsy, a significant proportion of cases have no known cause. Additionally, seizures negatively affect patient quality of life and increase mortality risk, but mostly remain unpredictable. This research aims to assess whether there may be an association between outdoor ambient air and noise pollution and unprovoked seizures and new-onset epilepsy. This research will consist of a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize the current evidence on this topic, and two population-based cohort studies using ICES data to estimate the associations between air and noise pollution and new-onset epilepsy.
