How to Get Promoted: Clinical Academics from Assistant to Associate Professor
Course Description
Whether you’re up for promotion next year or in five years, in order to be successful, it is important to be aware of the University requirements for promotion and the granting of continuing appointments. Clinical academics at the Assistant Professor rank can benefit from this practical workshop, which will provide guidance on preparing teaching dossiers, promoting dossiers, and presenting your case.
Section Notes
6.5 hours completed online through an asynchronous learning management system. Synchronous, live, online session is 90 minutes covering topics from asynchronous, work at your own pace materials. Come to the 90 minute session prepared with questions, draft documents ready for feedback and a familiarity with the promotions process and expectations. Select only one live, online, 90-minute session. Asynchronous materials are available on the learning management system for an unlimited timeframe following the course.
Overall Learning Objectives
- Describe challenges in the promotion process and identify strategies to overcome these challenges
- Critique examples of Teaching Philosophies and Candidates Statements for the purpose of making suggested improvements
- Identify resources that may be helpful to access during the promotion process
- Develop a network of colleagues who may be of mutual benefit in supporting each other through the promotion process.

Character-Based Leadership (2025-2026)
Course Description
This postgraduate character-based longitudinal leadership course within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will follow a multipronged approach including mentorship, reflective-based learning, targeted workshops, small-group discussion and experiential learning. The aim of this course is to develop leadership skills from a character-lens that stress the qualities of good leadership.

Introduction to Supportive & Strategic Questioning
Course Description
This 1-hour in-person interactive session will explore how questioning techniques can enhance learning for junior trainees in clinical settings. Faculty will gain practical tools to elevate their teaching and support learner development.
Overall Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

Describe the impact of interrogative questioning on learning by junior trainees in a clinical setting

List four educational roles of questioning in clinical settings

Given a clinical scenario, apply Bloom’s taxonomy to develop higher order questions tailored to the learner’s level and clinical context.
