How to Get Promoted: Clinical Academics from Assistant to Associate Professor
Course Description
Whether you’re up for promotion next year or in five years, in order to be successful, it is important to be aware of the University requirements for promotion and the granting of continuing appointments. Clinical academics at the Assistant Professor rank can benefit from this practical workshop, which will provide guidance on preparing teaching dossiers, promotion dossiers, and presenting your case.

Part 1: Online Preparation
4.75 hours of asynchronous learning through the learning management system. View module details.

One 90-minute synchronous, live session. View workshop details.

This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by Continuing Professional Development, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University for up to 6.00 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits.
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Continuing Professional Development, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. How to Get Promoted: Self-Paced Online Module
About the Module
4.75 hours of asynchronous learning through Moodle, including an introduction, readings, videos, recorded interviews, and activities.
The asynchronous module is available to anyone who would like to review it, even if you do not plan to attend the live workshop. Completion of the asynchronous module is eligible for 4.75 hours of credit.
How to Access the Module
The module is hosted on a Moodle site, and participants must be added by our team before they can access it.
Step 1: Submit a Request
Complete the short request form below and provide your Western University username or email.
Step 2: Get Added to Moodle
Our team will add you to the Moodle site and grant you access to the module.
Step 3: Complete at Your Own Pace
Once you have access, you can work through the module on your own schedule.

Learning Objectives
- Describe the activities to be completed to apply for promotion to Associate Professor and the timelines for the completion of these tasks.
- Locate the Conditions of Appointment for Physicians (2018) document on the Schulich website and discuss the relevant sections as they apply to promotion.
- Describe important elements to be included in a Teaching Philosophy and a Candidate’s Statement.
- Describe how to access Acuity Star and demonstrate the ability to input academic activities into Acuity Star.
- Describe “Academic Role Categories” and discuss the importance of the ARC as it applies to promotion.
- Discuss the importance and attributes of a highly functional Mentorship Committee.
Basic Science Leadership Panel
Program Description
Hear real experiences from senior leaders at Schulich as they demystify university structures, reflect on meaningful career journeys, and share what it means to take on leadership within Basic Medical Sciences. Whether you're curious about future roles or ready to take your next step, this session is designed to inspire and inform.
Overall Learning Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe common leadership pathways within Basic Sciences (e.g., UG/Grad Chair, interdisciplinary programs, Assistant Dean roles).
2. Identify the skills, mindsets, and supports that help faculty progress toward leadership roles.
3. Understand the university governance structure at a level useful for leadership readiness.
4. Recognize opportunities and rewards associated with leadership in Basic Sciences.
5. Highlight at least one potential next step for their own professional development.

Introduction to Supportive & Strategic Questioning
Course Description
This 1-hour in-person interactive session will explore how questioning techniques can enhance learning for junior trainees in clinical settings. Faculty will gain practical tools to elevate their teaching and support learner development.
Overall Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Describe the impact of interrogative questioning on learning by junior trainees in a clinical setting.
- List four educational roles of questioning in clinical settings.
- Given a clinical scenario, apply Bloom’s taxonomy to develop higher order questions tailored to the learner’s level and clinical context.
- Facilitate invited learner questioning in their own clinical teaching practice.

Course Description
Engaging a large audience requires more than delivering information—it demands clarity, structure, and interaction. This 1-hour faculty development session provides practical strategies to design and deliver presentations that capture attention and promote learning. Participants will explore key considerations for planning, structuring, and presenting effectively to large groups, with a focus on visual design and audience engagement.

- Identify the key considerations for giving a presentation.
- Plan an appropriate structure to support their presentation.
- Make visual design decisions to support clear messaging.

Character-Based Leadership (2026-2027)
Course Description
Character-based Leadership Program for Schulich Faculty is open to early-career faculty from clinical and basic science departments across the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Enrollment is limited to 40 participants.
This postgraduate character-based longitudinal leadership course within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will follow a multipronged approach including mentorship, reflective-based learning, targeted workshops, small-group discussion and experiential learning. The aim of this course is to develop leadership skills from a character-lens that stress the qualities of good leadership.
Overall Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe and integrate a comprehensive approach to leadership development including competency, character, and commitment.
- Recognize leader character as a composite of traits, virtues, and values using the Ivey Character Framework.
- Demonstrate how leadership character influences decisions and actions.
- Identify situational pressures and recognize how they impact decisions and actions.
- Evaluate your leader character.
- Develop your leader character through reflective practice, experiential learning, and recognition of barriers.
