Web Design

New Website Requests

To create a new website for your departments/divisions/units, please contact comms@schulich.uwo.ca with your request. Your request and website sitemap will need to be approved prior to opening an ITS ticket.

Website Refresh Project

In 2017, Western launched an updated design for websites in Cascade, with the goal of keeping the University’s web presence current and relevant to key audiences.

Visually, the template is a lot wider, providing extra space for content. A hero banner spans across the entire width of the homepage for striking visual impact. The homepage slideshow can also now play embedded YouTube videos. In addition, Western has added new CSS classes and new interactive widgets to give web editors more ways to present their content and tell their stories.

For more information about the new design, visit Western's Communications and Public Affairs website.

Process for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Websites

The Communications & Marketing Team is managing the transition to the new design for all Schulich Medicine & Dentistry websites. We are currently scheduling websites into 2020.

To migrate an existing website to the new design, please contact comms@schulich.uwo.ca with your request. You should plan for about three to four weeks to complete the update, including a website review, image resizing, homepage layout and content formatting.

Homepage Layout Options

We recommend the following three layout options:

  • Three-column with no mid-section
    Example: Research Office homepage

    Features:
    >Left-column section – to highlight key areas and/or programs, this section is flexible and can be customized; consider your audiences (who is visiting your website and for what purpose?)
    >Middle-column news section – this can feature your own individual news section, or plug-in to the School’s main news feed (the latter is recommended if you are not posting news items at least twice per week)
    >Right sidebar – this section is flexible and can be customized, but we do recommend displaying the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry events calendar, which is pulled by RSS feed to your website

  • Three-column with mid-section
Example: Schulich Medicine & Dentistry main homepage

Features (in addition to those above):
    >Mid-section – appearing below the three columns, to highlight additional content - Eg. Our People, Forms and Documents etc.

  • Two-column with image grid
    Example: Communications & Marketing homepage

    Features:
    >Six-image grid – to highlight key areas and/or programs, this section is flexible and can be customized; consider your audiences (who is visiting your website and for what purpose?)
    >Right sidebar – this section is flexible and can be customized, but we do recommend displaying the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry events calendar, which is pulled by RSS feed to your website
Each homepage must also include the “Connect with Us” section at the bottom of the page. If your department maintains its own official and approved social media account(s), you can link to your account(s). Otherwise, the School’s Twitter and Facebook accounts are the default.
